Cornelis Deventer Obituary

Beloved husband, father, and grandfather Cornelis "Case" Deventer age 90, of Holland, died Friday, January 13, 2012.

Case was born in Ijmuiden, the Netherlands. He studied journalism before the occupation of the Netherlands in WWII. During the war, he served with the Dutch Resistance, the Nederlandse Binnenlandse Strijdkrachten (Dutch Interior Forces). He emigrated to the United States from the Netherlands in May of 1953 with his wife, Elsa. They settled in Holland, Michigan, where they were members of Central Avenue Christian Reformed Church.

He was retired from Union Chemical and Oil Company of Chicago. Case was active in the Dutch International Society and for 11 years he produced and hosted his television show "Thinking of Holland", which was broadcast on PBS through WGVU. He also hosted the radio program "The Sounds of Holland" on WJBL-FM. He enjoyed playing the Dutch "Sinterklaas" at local events and was a volunteer at Evergreen Commons.


He was preceded in death by his sister Marchje Verhoog and his brother, Peter Deventer. Case is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elsa, daughters, Patricia Deventer (Calvin Sterk) Lansing, Linda McCarthy (Tom) Ada; grandchildren, Emily Sterk (Sam Masri), Benjamin Sterk, Caitlin McCarthy, Lauren McCarthy; great grandsons, Wyatt and Emmitt;

Luuk Deventer, Elly Desplanques, Miep Blankwater, and Ietje Woudstra.

Burial will be in Pilgrim Home Cemetery.
